Tourism In Srilanka

Srilanka is a popular place of tourist attraction for many reasons and tourism has been one among the causes for its rapid growth over the centuries. There are many counters available to meet the Currency exchange requirements of tourists in the country and it is easy to track currency exchange rates today. History talks of Fa-Hien (4th century) and Marco Polo (12th century) who had marked their high appreciation for Srilanka and today it is one of the world’s renowned tourist destinations in view of cultural heritage and scenic beauty.

After independence, Sri Lankan tourism had gained popularity and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has classified Sri Lanka into several resort regions suitable for tourism development.

Colombo – The commercial capital of Sri Lanka operating as a gateway to international tourists, also serves as a centre for sports and business, located beside the Mount Lavinia to Negambo. Some of the landmarks of Colombo include Planetarium, University of Colombo, MountLavinia beach, NelumPokuna Theatre, Colombo Lotus Tower, the National Museum, Galle Face Green, Viharamahadevi Park, Beira Lake and Colombo Racecourse. Also called the Greater Colombo Resort Region as classified by Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

The south coast zone - extends from Wadduwa to Tissamaharama, divided into two main regions stretching from Wadduwa to Galle and from Galle to Tissamaharama,

Some of the loveliest palm fringed bays in the country are found on this stretch of coast and the region is regarded as truly Sri Lankan. Some other attractions are Mandalay Villa, Southpoint Villa , Tabrobane Island,  Cape Weligama one of the  most exclusive beach hotels, Mirissaa very pretty bay and an ideal place to stay, Mirrisa Hills. The walled Dutch Fort, TalallaRereat are all pleasant experiences.

The Deep South is an abode to numerous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Turtle Bay gives you the comfort and privacy on deserted sandy beach.

Very high potential for camping inside Uda Walawe National Park and Yala National Park. At Uda Walawe, Kaluis another excellent attractive hideout option.

East Coast Resort Region. The main tourist attractions of East Coast region are Arugam Bay, Pasikudah, Trincomalee and Nilaveli, stretching from Kuchchaveli in the north to Pottuvil in the south.

West Coast Resort Region: The West Coast Resort Region spreads through Kalpitiya, Marawila and Waikkala regions.

High Country Resort Region: NuwaraEliya, Bandarawela and Maskeliya are incorporated in the High Country Resort Region.

Ancient Cities Resort Region: The world heritage sites which attract attention of travellers in this area are Anuradhapura, Dambulla, Kandy, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya.

Environment - Yala National Park has the world's highest concentration of leopards, the world's largest gathering of wild Asian elephants is found at Minneriya Park.

Sri Lanka is earmarked for its wide variety of biodiversity and wildlife resources, appraised among the 34 biodiversity curiosities of the world. Large number of species including flora and fauna are aboriginal to Sri Lanka.


National parks
Adam’s Bridge, Angammedilla, Bundala, Chundikkulam, Delft,  Flood Plains,  Gal Oya, Galway's Land, Hikkaduwa, Horagolla,  Horrowpatana, Horton Plains, Kaudulla, Kumana, LahugalaKitulana, Lunugamvehera, Madhu Road, MaduruOya,  Pigeon Island, Somawathiya, Udawalawe, Ussangoda,  Wasgamuwa, Wilpattu.


The Unawatuna beach at southern coast of the island was named as the World's Best Beach for 2004.The variety of coastal features such as bays, lagoons, sandbanks, and rocky headlands, along with aquatic leisure activities, such as sea bathing and swimming, surfing, boating, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, underwater photography, and scuba diving, are common features. Some of the favourable beaches for tourists are Tangalle, Beruwala, Mirissa, Bentota, Unawatuna Bay, Pasikudah, Uppuveli and Negombo.

Tourist activities:

Stilt fishing or Hummanaya is a famous outdoor activity for tourists.

Mountainous terrains, agricultural landscapes, waterfalls, places with diverse climatic conditions, reservoirs, and rivers are other remarkable attractions of Sri Lanka.

The place is also blessed with diverse zoological and botanical gardens.

Heritage Sites

Heritage tourism is popular in this region rich with UNESCO heritage sites which includes both archaeological and ecological sites. Buddhism is closely related to the heritage of this region.

Pilgrimage is a common part of its culture. Being a religious country, Sri Lanka has many places with religious and historic significance. Sri Lanka is also an encouraging terminus for sports such as cricket, rugby, golf and surfing.

Trekking, hiking, diving, rock climbing, deep sea fishing, whale watching and hot air ballooning are some of the adventure sports commonly found in Sri Lanka

Museums and theatres –Large number of theatres along with four national museums and 26 archaeological museums are established in Sri Lanka. Departments of National Museum and Department of archaeology are solely responsible for each of them

Festivals – is a multi-cultural country with variety of festivals celebrated by various communities. Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations, Vesak Festival, Christmas, Ramadan, Thai Pongal, and the Galle Literary Festival are a few of them..

Dance:  There are three main traditional dance forms in Sri Lanka: Kandyan dancing, low country dancing, and Sabaragamuwa dancing.

Food - Rice is the staple food of Sri Lanka. Others in line next to rice include hoppers, string hoppers, and pittu. Pure Ceylon tea is world renowned and the country stands dominant for its unconventional tea production.

Handicrafts - Handicrafts in Sri Lanka comprise of wood carving, silverware, brass castings, ceramic ware, bamboo products, pottery, batiks, lace works, cane works, costume jewellery, lacquerware, wooden masks, coir goods, handlooms, and ivory products.

A different kind of tourism, called ecotourism, sustainable tourism or responsible tourism facilitates tourists to partake in tourism all over Sri Lanka.
